In part one of my post on choosing a non profit board, I spoke about the importance of choosing people who share your passion for your cause. One way to ensure you are selecting those types of people is to look at your local community leaders.
Community leaders are people who take an active role in shaping the direction and future of their neighborhoods so you already know that they have a passion and drive that could be good for your organization. These people have no problem standing up for what they believe in and tend to be very vocal with those beliefs.
Community leaders are also adept at dealing with all different types of people: from political leaders, business owners and media, to the local neighborhood block watch; they have fostered relationships with these groups and can leverage them to help your organization.
Community leaders are an excellent resource when looking for prospective board members because they have already shown their passion, dedication, and commitment to a cause. Now all you need to do is determine if they are the right fit for your organization!
